Dinnington Town’s Sheffield & Hallamshire FA County Cup run came to an end at the quarter-final stage as they were beaten 0–4 by higher-league opposition Worsborough Bridge at the Blackout13.com Arena.
It was a frustrating night for Dinnington Town, who created a number of opportunities in the opening stages and could easily have taken control of the tie before the visitors struck.
Instead, the pattern of the evening was set early, with missed chances at one end punished clinically at the other.
Worsborough Bridge took the lead in the eighth minute through Smith, making it 0–1, and they doubled their advantage shortly after when Llewelyn scored in the 15th minute to put the visitors firmly in control at 0–2.
Despite falling behind, Dinnington Town continued to compete well and enjoyed spells of pressure, but the inability to convert chances proved costly.
Worsborough extended their lead in the 35th minute when Flanagan made it 0–3, giving the away side a commanding cushion heading into the break.
Any hopes of a second-half response were dealt an early blow when Brown added a fourth goal for Worsborough Bridge in the 49th minute, stretching the scoreline to 0–4 and effectively settling the contest.
To Dinnington Town’s credit, they continued to work hard and created further openings as the match wore on, but the story of the night remained unchanged.
The hosts were unable to find a breakthrough, while Worsborough Bridge managed the game with efficiency and composure befitting their higher-league status.
The final scoreline underlined the fine margins at this level of cup football.
Dinnington Town exit the County Cup knowing their performance merited more, but also aware that greater ruthlessness is required in decisive moments against strong opposition.
