Dinnington Town booked their place in the League Cup final with a battling 2-1 victory over Wirksworth Ivanhoe at Blidworth Welfare, surviving a late scare to seal a place in the showpiece event.
With the stakes at their highest, Dinnington wasted no time in making their mark. Will Eades set the tone inside the opening minute to fire his side into the lead before Wirksworth had even settled.
That early strike gave Dinnington Town the platform to dictate play, with their midfield pressing aggressively and their backline standing firm against Wirksworth’s attempts to find a foothold.
Despite their dominance, Dinnington Town couldn’t add to their lead before the break, with Wirksworth goalkeeper producing key saves to keep his side in contention.
But any hopes of a Wirksworth comeback were dealt a major blow just two minutes into the second half.
Josh Baxter doubled Dinnington Town’s advantage and sparking wild celebrations from their travelling support.
With a two-goal cushion, Dinnington Town controlled proceedings, managing the game well and limiting Wirksworth to speculative efforts.
However, as the clock ticked down, a late twist threatened to turn the tie on its head.
With just two minutes left, Wirksworth pulled one back setting up a tense finale.
But Dinnington Town held firm, defending resolutely to see out the win and secure their passage to the final.
Dinnington Town are next in action on Saturday 5th April, away to Kiveton Miners Welfare in the Black Dragon Premier Division North. Kick-off is at 3:00pm.
